Do you have a Petsmart in your city? They work with local humane societies to find homes for homeless animals. North Shore Animal league is another source that may have something in your area as well as the Humane Society of the U.S. Finally, there are breed specific rescues all over the country. Try googleing to find something in your area.
Petfinder is the most trusted, in my eyes. It gives you a list of local shelters & rescues. From that list, they give you SOME of the animals available for adoption from those shelters/rescues.
Best thing to do, in my own opinion, is visit your local shelters/rescues and see if any of the animals pull you by the heartstrings.
Pictures and ‘descriptions’ online only tell you so much. It’s unlikely for you to ‘fall in love’ with an animal you’ve never met.
Rather than looking up the internet for pet adoptions, why not go to your local shelter and pick up a pet there. They are all healthy, spayed or neutered, and are also tested to make sure of whether they need to be indoor only, outdoor only, good with kids, make sure they don’t try to bite if you try to take their bowl while they eat, etc. etc., try it. You may find that your future “best friend” is sitting at your local shelter right now!!
Check out your local shelters. Like city shelters, humane societys, etc. Also on petfinder you can get a list of all the rescue orgs in your area.
