How can I make people think twice before buying or adopting a pet?

Dogs & cats can live 10-20 years. Parrots, & turtles can live to 80. Are You willing to make that much of a commitment?
I have done pet recuses my entire life. These were pets who were abandoned, abused or worse. Would you like to see pics?

you said it so eloquently here, why not use that all the time?
Well, for one people have to make there own choices, and why is it your problem or your business what others do?
I have 2 cats and a parrot and I am fully aware of the commitment involved. But its true that a lot of people don’t think about it before purchasing something. I honestly don’t think at this point pet stores should even be able to sell pets anymore until the overpopulation of abandoned pets goes down; people should have to adopt from rescues or shelters.
show them the consequences of what can happen
i understand completely what you’re saying, but….
people do have the right to make whatever choices about pets that they want.
I understand fully what you’re trying to say. I wish people would think like that & be aware of the commitment & responsiblity there is to taking an animal into their home.
That’s why there are so many homeless animals out there!
Unfortuanatley, people like us have no right to tell people what to do, but we can encourage to do research before adopting or purchasing.
Most rescues will be sure that to adopter knows the commitment to taking an animal in, it’s almost like a child.

Explain to them the vet bills for nuders, spays, vaccines, dentals, injurys, ect. You can also explain to them the up keep of the animals such as food, toys and commitment. Make sure you are not telling people that owning an animal is alot of money and time though. Just make sure they undersatnd not to take on more then what they can handle.
People need to be informed and research before they adopt the family pets. They have to realize the typical lifespan; but, they also need to check out the personality of the pet they are interested in. They have to take into consideration that this is a lifetime commitment that may last much longer than many marriages and friendships. You are right to consider the age. Also, what if you are a very quiet detail oriented, neat freak and you are living in an apartment or condo? Are you going to bring in a parrot? Some of the Amazons can be heard 7 blocks away! Not to mention the damage that can be done to your home or furniture if you get sidetracked on the computer or a movie. What if they want to bring home a large dog that needs a lot of exercise and you work long hours at work. Do you have a doggie door and a large fenced in area? People need to be informed on the choices they make. There has to be a good match. If you have a friend who is interested in adding a pet to their family; I suggest saying something like, “great, let’s look on the Internet for information and find out all we can.” I would suggest avoiding the pet shops that sell cats and dogs; and maybe saying, “before you spend all that money lets just look at the shelters.” For example, I adopted two beautiful, spayed, declawed Himalayan cats. One was from a shelter and another was a posting on a web site. They were already litter trained! Yea! I have gotten numerous sweet dogs and gave them a safe, loving home for the last couple years of their lives. I have also adopted numerous parrots and birds. I had to take into consideration the temperament of the cats before I could bring them into a home with birds. Persians and Himalayans are usually passive and lazy. I did not want to bring in a cat that would look at a parrot as their next meal. I also did not want the parrots to sense a predator and become stressed out; this can make a bird ill.One can give their friend company while they pick their pet if they don’t force their own decision on them. Give information in a loving friendly tone and then let them make their own decision. Put yourself in their situation. Be an informed friend. Ask questions.I have voiced my advice to a lot of people while I was at the petsmart store and animal lovers are a special type of person. They care and they want to know. I have offered the information. You can to. Communication is a great way to get the word out !
must know the reasons why they buy such first ( some say fed up with humans)!
