I have two parakeets that my 2 yr. old daughter begged and cried for last time were were in the store. everyday she talks to them and tells them to eat and sleep. she loves them so much i myself have started to like them as well. Being this the first time that I am caring for two parakeets, I want to make sure they make it through the cold winter. What should I do to keep them from dying? Thank you in advance.

cover the cages with blankets at night when the temperature drops- get a book on parokeets- care

If they are in a cage indoors just keep them where they are and feed them like normal. They won’t be as active in the winter, that is normal.
Get a cover for their cage at night so they can sleep comfortably.

Put a heat pad that doesn’t get too hot on the bottom of the cage. Also get a heat lamp from the pet store to put over the cage during the day (make sure it is not touching the bars because it gets hot). Also cover them with warm blankets.

Well, if you are keeping them outside, I would suggest that you bring them in the house for the winter. Left in a cage outdoors in very cold climates, a parakeet can easily die from being too cold. Larger birds do better outside in the cold. If your birds are kept in a large outdoor aviary where they can fly around to generate heat, they could be fine. But just being in a small cage, they stand a great chance of freezing to death. They lose much of their body heat through their legs and feet. If you are already keeping them inside, you don’t have to do anything different than you already are. Your birds should be covered every night anyhow so they can have some sleep in the dark. They will do just fine in the house at any temperature that you are comfortable at. Be sure to keep them out of any draft, no matter where you keep them. Please read my profile

Well if you heat your house you don’t keep them right next to a window or any drafts they should be okay. I have a parakeet and a cockatiel and my dad is crazy and tries to save on the energy bill by turning the heat down to 60 at night when it’s below 0 most of the time. They are okay but we do have happy huts in their cages. They are soft little beds they can climb into if they are cold, it works they sleep in there very night. We also cover the cages for many reasons, but that being one of them. Good Luck, if you need more info on the little guys here is a site you can look at. http://www.parrotcentral.net/companion_parrots.htm

Cover the cage at night when its time for sleep.
MAKE SURE YOU KEEP THEM INSIDE DURING THIS WEATHER..
USE A REGULAR BLANKET, I MEAN AT FIRST THEY’LL GET SCARED BUT EVENTUALLY THEY WILL GET USED TO IT. AND IF THEY JUST HANG ON THE CAGE ONCE YOU COVER IT COUGH THEIR FEET AND KEEP TOUCHING THEM UNTIL THEY GET DOWN AND STAND ON THE WOOD.

    GOOD LUCK HUN.
