How long do parakeets usually stay in a pet store?
I want to get parakeets(budgies) but I want to know how long they usually stay in a petco.
Also I want to know how old they are when you buy them.

wel usually the colors everybody tends to favor r the white, yellow, or pretty blue ones and they can come and go everyday but i would guess around a week or so i got 2 and one was in there for a month and nobody wanted her–she turned out to b the sweetest thing and her duaghters and sons r very beautiful. This may just b a rumor(i hope so!) but parakeets come from pet mills and r sent to pet stores and pet mills r filthy and horrible places…but wat i heard was that once a parakeet get to b old in a pet store-they kill it =( its a wonder why i never see older parakeets at the stores so when and if u do get a parakeet/budgie (and u should because they r wonderful indoor and outdoor companions!) get the one u like personality wise, not color based and i would get a male and female so that they could have babies they r adorable! hope i helped and good luck!
I worked at Petco for 2 years, and the trend seemed to be about a month. They go out pretty regularly, since they are a popular pet. They are also very well taken care of while they are there.
I work at PetSmart & can tell you parakeet’s are never “put down” due to old age, or any other animal for that reason. Parakeet’s go quick where I work, last shipment we put out was gone within a week. Any animal deemed “unsellable” is adopted out.
I’m not sure about Petco but where I work, budgies often stay in the store from a few days up to a month. But normally a couple of weeks before being sold. Popular colours will sell quicker, where I work, the lutino budgies seem to be the popular ones.
The reason you don’t normally see older budgies in a store is because they only get young ones in and they normally all sell pretty quick. I have never heard of a bird being killed in a pet shop for being too old but maybe that can happen in a few rare places.
Ask your pet store where the birds come from. Some are from pet mills like another answer said. Where I work we get ours from families and breeders but I would only buy from a breeder personally.
the whole thing about petco im sure is wrong, they wouldnt do that, that would be inhumane, and i got all mine at a pet stores and they r pretty healthy and happy, and i do agree, u should get a male&female, having a pair will make them happier, i have a male&female together and they r really happy, if u think u can handle breeding, if u want to breed or not u should check out this site freewebs.com/huggybec or u can email me if u want need some info on breeding horses_and_oceans@yahoo.com
