Why does the price for adopting a pet range in different areas?
For instance, we used to live in a huge city area in Florida and the adoption fee was $50.
We’ve recently moved to a different state and the adoption fee in the local shelters is anywhere from $70 to $150!! It’s outrageous!

It really depends on the kind of care that was provided while the pet is in the adoption center as well as where the pet was temporarily homed. Smaller adoption center seems to ask for a bit more because their cost of operation are higher and they do not get huge sponsorship from well known organizations. Also, the cost of maintaining the pet itself, vet care, health screen, immunizations, neutering – all of them has to be taken into consideration.
Some food company sponsors food and other necessities for the shelters, while others rely mainly on private donations.
No kill centers seems to have higher adoption cost because they need to house the pet as long as they don’t get adopted. They have to provide care and shelter and if the pet does not get adopted, the shelter itself will be a forever home for them.
The pound cost less because the pet receives minimal care and after a certain period, they are PTS. Thus, the cost is much lower.
That is the reason why adoption fees can have such a huge difference in cost in different part of the country.
